Paradise Valley in summer is beautiful and full. In February it is beautiful and empty, and we would gently argue that is the better trade.
The park is still open
Gardiner's north entrance is the only Yellowstone gate that takes cars year-round, and the road from Mammoth east to Cooke City stays plowed all winter. That road runs the length of the Lamar Valley, which is the reason people come in winter: wildlife against snow, with a fraction of the summer traffic. Bring layers and a thermos; there is nowhere to buy either once you are out there.
Chico does not close
Open-air mineral pools are better in the cold than in the heat. Steam, snow on the pines, and a dining room afterwards.
What to know before you book
In winter it is our two tiny homes that stay open; the cabins close after October. Winter here is harsh, cold and very windy, which is exactly what makes a tiny home feel so cozy once you are inside with the door shut. We keep the property plowed all winter, so getting to your door should not be a problem.
You do not need snow tires or four-wheel drive to get here, but they never hurt in Montana in winter. Our roads are not salted and can be icy, and the wind drifts snow across them, so check conditions before you drive and give yourself extra time. Bring real winter layers, not just a jacket.
Why we mention it
We take one-night stays, which matters more in winter than in summer. If you are driving through, or want to see the Lamar without committing to a week, you are not locked out by a three-night minimum the way you would be almost anywhere else in this valley.
